Assignment #6: User Interface Analysis

Introduction to Human/Computer Interaction
CS 5540/6540

DUE:  Teams and Topics 26 Nov 2008 (11:59 pm)

General Task:

In teams of two, choose a user interface with qualities you find evocative. The choice of interface is not restricted to software interfaces, but may include anything you interact with. Choose an interesting case study.

Requirements:

  1. Functionality
In no more than 1 slide (a paragraph of notes), give a succinct overview of what the interface does. What is its goal? What are the issues of the functionality that must be addressed in the interface?
  2. Interaction
Provide an overview of the major interaction components. Compare these with characteristics of a good interface. How does this interface conform to those principles? What are the best and worst features of the interface? How would you improve or change the interface? Be sure to refer to specific principles of good interfaces in the lecture notes, the text, and any other relevant material.
  3. Presentation
Working with two in a group, develop a trenchant overview of your analysis in the form of a potential five minute PowerPoint class presentation. Create a .ppt file, with elucidating descriptions of each slide on the "Notes Page" (see View Menu) associated with each slide. We will post your presentation on the web site and bring in our laptop for you to use during your presentation, if yours is selected.

We would like each team to analyze a unique interface, so before starting your analysis, use the link at the top of the page to submit your team names and topic by Wednesday, 26 Nov 2008. Instructor approval is required for your subject choice of interface. If for any reason your topic is not approved we will inform you and ask for a new one.

By the project due date, turn in your .ppt file to cs5540 assignment6. Be sure to put the names of both team members on the introduction page of the presentation slides.
